Alon's thoughts on the subject



Since moving to New York in the early 2003, Alon has played piano and collaborated with Jazz greats including William Parker, Daniel Carter, Roy Campbel, Sam Ford, Bob Moses, Ben Allison, Quinsin Nachoff, John Ellis, Anat Cohen, Fransisco Mela, Andy Statman, Chris Lightcap, Fima Efron, Frank London, Chris Cheek, Chris Speed, Michael Marcus, Jeff Hirshfield, Matt Darriau, Marc Helias, Marc Dresser, Andrew Cyrile, Assif Tzahar, Harold Rubin, Marcus Rojaz, Brigann Kraus, Lukas Ligeti, Bob Gulotti, John Lockwood, Ed Schuller, George Schuller, Alicia Svigals, Alber Beger, Albert and Yossi Piamenta, and many more.

Alon has played as sideman in various ensembles including Frank London's trio (with Marcus Rojaz and Frank London), Baye Kouyate and his afro beat ensemble featuring Emilio Valdez, Alicia Sviagals Klezmer Quartet with Larry Eagle, Kenny Wollesen Himalays with Ben Goldberg and other guests, Nick Gianni's Evolution , Root Valdez and QB3 , Daniel Carter Quartet with Roy Campbell and Sabir Mateen, William Parkers Ensemble with Andrew Bemkey and Matt Welch, Jeremy Dannmen quartet with Ben Allison and Tony Moreno, New York Sound painting Orchestra, Dave Schnitter, Bruce Cox, Saul Rubin ensemble and many more. As an active band leader, Alon founded quintet TALAT in 2002. The ensemble is dedicated to his original works and recorded a CD on John Zorn's Tzadik Records mixed by the great Bill Laswell. The group played and toured frequently in Canada, Israel, Europe, U.K, France and the U.S in venues such as the Washington D.C Jewish music Festival, Palm Beach Celebrate Israel Festival, The Blue Note Jazz Club, Joes' Pub at the Public Theatre, Cambridge Sons of Abraham Festival, CGBG's Gathering of the stars Festival, Brooklyn and Williamsburg Jazz Festival, Columbia University' Israel Day and many more.

Alon has released his piano trio LABYRINTHS on the Swedish label Ayler records, with the Bob Gulotti and John Lockwood on the rhythm section, playing his original compositions. Another Trio with Dan Weiss and Francois Moutin is in the post production stages and will be released in the fall.

Education

Alon received his Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory in December 2002, studying piano with Fred Hersch, Paul Bley, Ran Blake, Danilo Perez, big band and jazz composition with Bob Brookmeyer, improvisation with Jerry Bergonzy, Bob Moses, George Garzone, Henry Thredgill and Uri Caine in the School for Improvisation in New York. Alon received his Bachelor's in 1999 from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance having studied composition with Mark Kopytman, Tzvi Avni, Heinz Alexander, Joseph Bardanashvily and movie scoring with Slava Ganelin.
